Black Garlic Is Created Equal
Texas Black Gold Standard
Texas Black Gold products are truly vegan and beyond organic because they're grown without fertilizer or pesticides and are naturally Non-GMO, for that matter.
Many people don't realize this, but certified organic is not always what people expect. Vegans for example, feel assured they're eating clean produce when, in fact, organic fertilizer can be used to grow certified organic vegetables, but when tested, animal protein is often found due to the organic manure, so it's not a truly vegan product.
Supporting locally grown or organic agriculture would eliminate the need to irradiate produce. The only way to really ensure that you are not eating irradiated food is to purchase from a local farmer market, or shop organic (USDA certified organic does not allow the use of irradiation).
Netflix presents - Rotten: 'Garlic Breath'
Garlic Breath, the third episode of Netflix’ Rotten docuseries — takes an in-depth look at its less savory side. For example, 90 percent of the world’s garlic comes from China, and most of that from the eastern coastal province of Shandong. China exports most of its garlic crop to the United States. The strongest U.S. demand is for peeled Chinese garlic.
If we knew all the details of how the garlic comes to us, however, we might think twice about where we buy it from. The most shocking part of Garlic Breath was undercover video footage of Chinese prisoners forced to peel garlic for up to 16 hours a day. After losing their fingernails to the work, some of them resort to chewing off the roots!
Food Irradiation
“The process of exposing food to a controlled amount of energy called ‘ionizing radiation’. There are three different types of radiation allowed: Gamma rays, X-rays and electron beam radiation”. This process acts by damaging the food product’s DNA beyond its ability to repair. Therefore, organisms can no longer successfully continue the process of cell division, and the organism ceases all processes related to maturation or reproduction.
Three main rationales for food irradiation:
-
To prevent food poisoning: by reducing the level of harmful bacteria such as E.coli or Salmonella.
-
To prevent spoilage: by reducing the microbial load on foods, meaning it destroys bacteria, molds and yeast.
-
To increase shelf life: by slowing the ripening or sprouting in fresh fruits and vegetables.
But what are the real risks associated with irradiating food?
Irradiating food reduces nutrient content. The UIC School of Public Health reports that irradiating food reduces the content of several key nutrients such as Vitamin E (~15-30 %); Thiamin (~10-25%); Vitamin C (5-15%); Riboflavin (~7-10%); Pyridoxine (~10-20%); and Vitamin B12 (~15-20%).

California Residents - Prop 65
What is this warning?
California Proposition 65 is a law that is unique to the State of California. Regulations concerning the law are processed through the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), which maintains a list of chemicals that it determines as ‘known to the State of California to cause cancer and/or reproductive toxicity’.
Why does my product have this warning?
California Proposition 65 entitles California consumers to special warnings for products that contain chemicals determined by the state of California to cause CANCER and BIRTH DEFECTS or other reproductive harm if those products expose consumers to such chemicals above a certain level set by California.
Why don't all similar products carry the warning?
Because of inconsistent Prop 65 enforcement, this sometimes explains why you will see certain products in the market with warnings, and virtually identical products without warnings. Other companies may elect not to provide warnings because, in their assessment, they conclude that they are not required to do so under Prop 65 standards. A lack of warnings for a product does not necessarily mean that the products is free of the same substances at similar levels.
Is it safe?
Some products may contain one or more listed chemicals that, by California standards may present a risk of CANCER and/or REPRODUCTIVE TOXICITY, if exposure levels to an individual are high. A Proposition 65 warning does not necessarily mean a product is in violation of any product-safety standards or requirements. All Exxel and American Rec products meet federal regulatory standards. The Warning is provided to allow consumers to assess their individual risk.
